What are sectors and industries?

Broad market groups (sectors) vs narrower career categories (industries) — how StockSt organizes listings.

A sector is a broad slice of the economy — or, on StockSt, a broad career category — where related listings sit together. Think entertainment, sports, or technology-style groupings: many names can share the same sector even if their day-to-day work differs.

An industry is a narrower group inside a sector. Within entertainment you might see music, film, or social-media creators as separate industries. Industries help you compare closer peers instead of mixing unrelated careers.

Categories matter for research and diversification. Comparing two music artists is fairer than comparing a musician to an athlete on price alone. Spreading StarBux across sectors also reduces the chance that one news cycle hits your whole portfolio.

On StockSt, open the Sectors and Industries boards to browse listings by group, or use the sector and industry filters on the stock list. Practice picking two names in the same industry, then two in different sectors, and notice how the stories differ.
